How To Turn Off Google Smart Lock

IoT Guides & TutorialsJanuary 14, 2023

By saving your passwords to your Google account, you won’t have to remember them every time you sign in. Google Smart Lock is an Internet of Things (IoT) security feature introduced to save time and simplify the security on Android, Chrome, and Windows OS. With it, you can store every password you have in one place, sync them with your Google account, and access them from anywhere with any device.

Although this feature is convenient, your passwords are exposed and can readily be accessed if your phone is stolen. This article covers the basic steps you can do to disable Google Smart Lock across your devices.

What Is Google Smart Lock?

Security is extremely important for our online accounts containing our personal information and sensitive data. Nonetheless, entering your password repeatedly into an app or website can be a hassle. Fortunately, Google made things easier with the Google Smart Lock.

This feature provides various options for making it easier to access your Android phone and your Chromebook in secure but simplified ways. In Android, you can keep your phone unlocked in certain preapproved, known-to-be-safe situations. At the same time, it allows your Android phone to keep your computer unlocked in ChromeOS.

How To Turn Off Google Smart Lock On Android Device And Chrome

For the past few years, Google Smart Lock started showing security gaps in its password implementation. Anyone who obtains possession of a person’s personal laptop could also access their passwords, as Google Smart Lock does not require a master password.

Just head over to Settings > Manage Passwords. Click the little icon that resembles an eye to see all the past passwords you’ve entered and saved.

Only a limited number of apps offer Smart Lock support on your Android phone or Windows laptop. Aside from being limited to Chrome, this feature from Google also lacks a dedicated user interface and password generator.

Turn Off Smart Lock On Chrome

To disable Google Smart Lock on Windows Chrome, follow these steps.

Step 1: Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner of Chrome to access the browser settings.

Step 2: Click the Manage passwords option under the Passwords and forms section. You can also search for ‘password’ by typing it into the search bar.

Step 3: Once you select Manage passwords, disable the option to save passwords by toggling off the “Offer to save passwords.” Also, consider ‘Auto Sign-In’ as well.

Turn Off Smart Lock On Android

Disabling the Smart Lock feature for Passwords on Android is a similar process. To disable Google Smart Lock on devices that run on Android, simply follow the steps below.

Step 1: On your Android device, open Chrome and select Settings.

Step 2: Click Passwords and toggle off the switch for Save Passwords and Auto Sign-in to disable it.

How To Manage Your Saved Passwords

Now that Google’s Smart Lock has been disabled across your devices, you must ensure that your saved passwords are properly deleted to prevent unauthorized people from accessing them. To do this:

  • Select the Delete icon from your Google Password account.
  • The other option would be to clear your browsing history on Google Chrome. It is important to choose “All” in the duration period option to include every password saved on Chrome.
